. . . that is according to KASABIAN.
With a label like Kasabian, you know this band is more than meets the eye. Named after serial celebrity-killer Charles Manson's getaway driver turned court witness Linda Kasabian, this four-piece band hailing from Leicester, United Kingdoms, embodies the grittily rip-roaring spirit of mutiny right down to the marrow.
Interestingly, Kasabian also refers to the Armenian word for "butcher" -- a suitably provocative image for a ruthlessly inventive quartet who cuts the crap out of pop, slashing up a slew of sounds before rearranging the pieces into a collage of dark electronics, atmospheric vibes, hip-hop beats and good ol' rock and roll.
Having lived together in one room of a remote old farmhouse and immersing themselves amongst records by the likes of Blackalicious, The Who, The Beatles, DJ Shadow and Boards of Canada, Kasabian is made up of vocalist Tom Meighan, lead guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter Sergio Pizzorno and bassist Chris Edwards who had known each other as childhood friends. Christopher Karloff joined the trio on the guitar and keyboards after he was spotted at a pub, thanks to his long sideburns which made him "look the part" as the final ensemble to the band.
Irritated by the state of indie music today ("It's just drone jingle jangle -- boring music"), the members of Kasabian has, since the age of 17, taken matters into their instinctive and constantly creative hands to smash some sense into the heart of rock.
"From day one when we started this band, I've always had the confidence," says Meighan. "We always had something about us, from the beginning. We believed nothing could limit us."
Based on their cultural background, it comes as no surprise that Kasabian are unapologetic and feverishly opinionated about their artistic beliefs. Having experienced in their hometown, the height of hardcore -- a darkly underscored genre fusing hip hop grooves with house music mixes -- during the early '90s, this unpretentious band went on to debunk the apparent pretension of mainstream club culture and soulless bubblegum pop by instilling a refreshingly gripping vibe to contemporary rock in their debut self-titled album.
Kasabian is a highly inspired collection, dripping raw with the blood of bullish youth from the in-your-face lyrics of "Reason Is Treason" ("K! I! L! L!") and the drawling vocal soundscape of "Club Foot" to the wildly successful underground echo of "Processed Beats." Fiercely assertive and completely possessed, the album proves to be a multi-layered tribute to the age-old ethics of rock and roll while also breathing a crusader's machismo into new grounds of mind-seizing tunes. Kasabian is testimony to the foursome's excavation of traditional rock as it injects a much-needed, nerve-bitingly charged reinvention of the present lightweight indie scene.
"There are no characters out there, they're all just bleak," says Sergio, reeking an unmistakable attitude that could only be Kasabian. "It's boring, there's no soul, no rhythm, no balls. No one's having fun with it any more. We take our music seriously, definitely, but we want to have fun with it."
And have fun they do. With respect to performing their pure magic to a live audience, Kasabian just can't get enough of the drugged exhilaration experienced by their incredible band-to-fans rapport.
"It's a wonderful thing to be doing with your life," says Tom. "It's such a satisfying feeling to see these people get a buzz off you. It's complete satisfaction. You can't get any higher."
Nobody captures passion quite like the zealously unpretentious Kasabian.
