we were talkin' about it the last time, aight? it's pretty interesting though i haven't watched it yet. u were telling of some sorta casual living - love at first sight <euphemistic it's actually lust at first sight. we're all attracted, first, with the physique: all between the head and the foot, then everything else follows turning l-u-s-t to l-o-v-e. i really hafta watch this movie.

"The truth...without it, we are animals." Closer is a movie about four people who seem to have this need to be bizarrely honest with each other, even if it meant hurting the ones they love. Or perhaps they used honesty as just an excuse to hurt others. And perhaps they don't really love the person they say they love. Or maybe they truly do love the person they are with, but feel the need to dramatize their love by giving in to temptation. Revenge may be sweet, but the truth about revenge is even sweeter. The movie begins with Dan (Jude Law) and Alice (Natalie Portman) staring at each other and playfully flirting with their eyes while crossing the busy streets of London. Her carelessness causes Alice to be hit by a taxicab, and upon coming to in the arms of Dan, she says, "Hello, stranger." Perfect beginning, no? Soon, Dan and Alice hit it off while they walk back towards Dan's office where he writes obituaries for a London newspaper. Even though at the time Dan was seeing someone, he can't help but be fascinated by this Alice character, who says that she was a stripper and left New York due to a bad relationship. Time passes. Dan has written a novel about Alice's life. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a professional photographer hired by Dan to shoot his novel's cover. Dan is instantly attracted to Anna and gives in to temptation by kissing her (although, he would later argue that she kissed him). Alice saw the betrayal in Dan's eyes and Anna photographs her tear-filled eyes upon her request. That photograph would later be one of the main displays in Anna's exhibition. By then, Anna has met Dr. Larry (Clive Owen) a dermatologist by chance at an aquarium, and the two will eventually marry. But that's not where the story ends. It's where the betrayals begin. Even though the concept of the story is somewhat ridiculous (it's seriously a love rectangle), it was so cleverly written and witty that you start to believe that something like this could possibly happen in real life. Human nature at its worst was presented clearly and visibly to the audience, making us realize that these are probably the things are cheating couples go through. Just that they were too cowardice to be honest with each other. The couples in this movie were brutally honest with each other than at some point in the movie, I felt like shouting "stop being so honest!" Then I start to wonder if their so-called honesty was not exactly an effort to be truthful in a relationship, but more as a weapon to hurt those around them. The movie doesn't really tell you what to think. It simply shows the audience what these four people did, and left everything else for us to decide. Did they really have sex with each other? Did they even really love each other? Did he really tell the truth or was it actually a lie? One can't help but laugh at the wonderful wittiness of this movie, and how it managed to manipulate one's mind without looking like it tried too hard. It was, in essence, a simple movie with a somewhat linear storyline, and yet the images are stuck in our minds and we are left pondering as we exit the theatres: were we told the truth? The writing wasn't the only one that made this movie work. The cast was perfect. This is such a contrast to Alexander where every single person was quite possibly miscast. Each actor presented their roles wonderfully. Jude Law definitely showed his versatility as an actor with the number of movies he has this Fall (6 of them, to be precise). He was charming in Alfie, funny in I Heart Huckabees, but was downright horrible in Closer. And they all worked. It has been a while since I last saw Julia Roberts in a movie, and this was definitely a good comeback. Clive Owen (whom I, frankly, think should be the next James Bond) was perfect as Dr. Larry, who appears to be this good natured and funny man, but is actually amazingly cunning behind the scenes. Natalie Portman...what can I say about her? She's beautiful, no matter what color or style her hair is in the movie, and her face was just perfect for Alice because she has this innocent, sweet look, but you realize when you look deep inside her eyes, that there is a lot of baggage there that she will never let anyone see. Don't let the trailer fool you. This movie is not a dramatic, weepy, or sad story about four heartbreakers and love. This is a funny, witty, and disconcerting movie about four people who seem to break hearts right and left without feeling an ounce of guilt. They say they're sorry, but are they really? It was seriously like: "I love you, but I had sex with her, and still am having sex with her, but I don't want you to leave because I'm selfish, and if you leave and find someone else, I'd be jealous, so don't leave because I love you, and want to sleep with you, but I also want to sleep with her." Oh, and yes, lots of sexual conversations in this movie. But who cares? Go watch this movie.

Does the fact that people are watching while you're doing it add to the thrill? That's just gross. tsk tsk
